I’m sure you are already painfully aware of just how bad of a reputation the network marketing industry has, in some circles. If you are like most network marketers, you’ve seen the resistance, felt the backlash and heard the uneducated ramblings of the less than thrilled…more than a few times. Why do people hate on the network marketing industry so much? What on earth, is at the root of our seriously bad reputation?

Well..that’s what we’re going to explore here. Though, I’m more intrigued by what we can do to change it

Here’s the thing…and it may ruffle some feathers when I utter this..but …the truth is..it’s kind of our own fault. WHAT??? Yep…I said it. Reps are almost exclusively at fault for the stinkin’ reputation that the network marketing industry has. 

Think about it. It only takes one bad apple to spoil the bunch. I’m sure you can think of more than on rep who’s come on too strong, been hypey, spammy or totally unprofessional. Truth be told, I’ve certainly witnessed my fair share of network marketers who have exaggerated claims in a big way, just to sign people up. This kind of bad behaviour creates a stink on all of us!

Network Marketers Ruin Everything

 

As my mentor, Ray Higdon likes to say…the problem isn’t ‘network marke-TING’ …the problem is ‘network marke-TERS’. I completely concur. The thing is..some people treat this as a lottery ticket and others treat it as a respectable long-term profession. Evidently, there is a huge difference in approach, here.

In order to figure out how to go about correcting our bad reputation, let’s look at what we definitely should NOT be doing. We definitely should avoid berating people for their opinions or attempting to ‘educate’ them on the ins and outs of why network marketing is the best thing on earth. If you even hint at getting defensive, they’ll pick up on it and it will only make them that much more committed to the cause of proving you… and the entire industry…wrong. Besides, if you get all mouthy and start launching into a big story about jobs being the real pyramids…they’re gonna think you’re crazy ….and run! …NOT the right approach lol.

Secondly, stop making people feel like crap for having a job. There are loads of people outside of the network marketing industry who have zero desire to start a business. That’s totally cool. One of the biggest mistakes that network marketers make is to think that EVERYONE should be in the network marketing industry. That is just not the case and nor would we want it to be. Imagine the state of the world if we had 7.6 billion network marketers and nothing else lol! I know…it’s a bit of an exaggeration but you get my point.

It’s our collective aggressiveness and judgmental behaviour that gives us our bad reputation. So..yes…we kind of deserve it. In fact, we’ve brought it on ourselves. As a result, we must also work, collectively, to fix the problem and the only way to do that is from the inside out.

3 Quick Tips to Rehab the Reputation of the Network Marketing Industry

I’ve got three quick tips that if implemented, en masse, will go a long way toward permanently rehabilitating the reputation of the network marketing industry. Not only that, but these tips will even have us held in high regard by the general public. Amazing right?

When you are showing people what you do…never hype it up, exaggerate or lie about anything. Don’t tell people it’s easy and they’ll get rich. That sets them (and you) up for failure.

If you come at this thing from a position of lack, you’ll end up saying things that you shouldn’t, out of desperation. That might work in the short-term but your new rep is going to figure out real quick, that network marketing is not a super easy, guaranteed lottery ticket…and then what? You look like an ass, they’ll quit and there’s a good chance they’ll bad mouth the whole entire thing to as many people as will listen. Not good.

Be truthful. Most importantly, set the right expectations, up front. The right people will not be put off by hard work so you do yourself a disservice by misleading them.

 

2- Start Your People Off Right

 

Ideally, as soon as you bring a new person in, have a launch meeting with them. Set them up with an accurate picture of what to expect, what is typical AND what is possible. Empower them with the reality of the network marketing industry. It’s a fabulous profession exactly as it is, so you don’t have to hype it up.

 

3- Be Awesome!

 

Ok..maybe I’m being a bit silly here but the idea is to be a good person. Carry yourself with some danged integrity and govern yourself with some ethics. Imagine if every rep in the network marketing industry did this? How cool would that be? Basically, …just don’t be douchey. It’s that simple.

I love Ray Higdon’s ‘Wealth Wednesdays’ where he encourages all network marketers to go out into their marketplace and do something kind for a stranger, that involves parting with some money. Ultimately, the amount you spend isn’t relevant. It’s simply about the act of caring and service. The person you treat, cannot know that it’s you who did it but they MUST know that SOMEONE cared enough to do something kind and thoughtful for them.

Imagine if all network marketers behaved this way? Don’t you think that would change how people perceive us out there? I certainly believe it would.

Consider your company events when you have 20 or 30 thousand people all converge on one city for a convention. Now imagine, if all of those reps were holding doors for people, having conversations, being kind, tipping like champions and conducting themselves like true servant leaders. Don’t you think all of those people would be eager for that network marketing convention to return? You can bet your butt they would!

Furthermore, consider if all companies within the network marketing industry behaved in the same upstanding manner. Truly, it would go a long way toward rehabilitating the industry’s reputation on a grand scale. That’s how we change how we are perceived. That’s how we turn all of those negative opinions on their head. 

We don’t do it through clever comebacks or spouting statistics. We do it, by changing ourselves, as individuals…one at a time.  Ultimately, it could truly be a domino effect and that would be glorious. Collectively, we raise the entire vibration of the network marketing industry by changing it from the inside out. Will you do your part?
