But then….you got the dreaded “is this a pyramid scheme?’ objection…dun, dun, dun!

I stumbled all over my words, got all embarrassed and weird about it. It was not pretty!
I hope that by sharing with you, my 2 super simple strategies to quickly overcome the ‘pyramid scheme’ objection (even if you’re brand new to network marketing), you’ll be able to bypass many of the pitfalls that claimed me, early on. You may want to take some notes as you read on, because these 2 strategies may be simple but they are very powerful! The particular objection-handling strategies I use for the ‘pyramid scheme’ question, are kind of a hybrid of a few methods that I learned from various mentors, most notably, Ray Higdon and Matt Morris.
“I Wish I would have known what I am about to share with you, when I first started in network marketing…”
You are definitely going to get the ‘pyramid scheme’ objection from time to time so it’s best to learn how to quickly overcome it without skipping a beat. So here we go! What follows are my 2 super simple strategies guaranteed to quickly overcome the ‘pyramid scheme’ objection, even if you’re brand new!
The minute someone throws out this objection, the first thing you want to do is gauge the energy of the person saying it. Not everyone who calls network marketing ‘a pyramid’ is saying it with a negative connotation. Often, they erroneously believe the two to be synonymous and aren’t actually being negative about it at all. So, now, imagine if you assumed they had a hate-on for network marketing and you, in turn, became super defensive about it. That wouldn’t go well, right?
Never presume to know what another person is thinking and feeling when they ask you a question. Find out!
Here’s what you need to do to quickly overcome the ‘pyramid scheme’ objection …Try to get a sense of your prospect’s energy when they ask you, ” Is this one of those Pyramid Scheme thingys?” Are they smiling and questioning in nature or do they look annoyed, angry or suspicious? Hold on to that information and then say this….
“That’s an interesting question. How do you mean that?” Let them answer. How they answer this question, will determine whether to use #1 or #2 of my super simple strategies guaranteed to overcome the ‘pyramid scheme’ objection.
If their energy is questioning but not negative, you can quickly overcome the ‘pyramid scheme’ objection, using super simple strategy #1.
‘Pyramid Scheme’ Objection: Super Simple Strategy Guaranteed To Quickly Overcome It, #1!
Be Honest: Confirm That It’s Network Marketing
Don’t be weird about it or people will think it’s skeevy. If you get all uncomfortable and start shifting in your seat and saying ‘um, um…like..’ , they’re going to run away! Be honest! People are not stupid and they will know if you are evading a question. With many prospects, you’ll quickly discover that they don’t harbour any resentments or preconceived ideas about network marketing, anyway. Often, they have just repeatedly heard network marketing referred to ‘a pyramid’ and do not realize that it has a negative connotation, at all. It’s also possible that they have known someone who was in the industry at one point or perhaps they have done it before, themselves, but were not very successful. Listen to what they tell you and then you’ll know what to say next.
“Don’t let irrelevant people waste your time. Your time is valuable…” (click to tweet)
Scenario A:
If they’ve had a negative experience in the past or know of someone who has, ask them….
“I’m curious, why do you think you (they) weren’t successful? Tell me a little about your (their) experience.”
Make an effort to really listen to them so that you’ll know what the issue is and how you might help them to see, that this time, things will be different.
You might say, “Well, sounds to me like you weren’t really set up to succeed last time around. Our team culture is very supportive and we pride ourselves on having one of the best and most easily duplicatable training systems in the industry. I am going to lock arms with you and show you exactly how to be successful with this company. You won’t be doing it by yourself.”
It’s also really powerful to share a story of someone on your team who had the same apprehensions but overcame them and experienced great success.
Scenario B:
If they’ve never had any experience with the industry at all but had just heard network marketing referred to as ‘ a pyramid scheme’, it’s really simple. Here’s what you say,
“Do you mean, is this network marketing? Yes, of course it is, I wouldn’t be doing it if it wasn’t.”
Then move one. That’s it, that’s all. If you don’t make a big deal of it, neither will they.
‘Pyramid Scheme’ Objection: Super Simple Strategy Guaranteed To Quickly Overcome It, #2!
Be Firm: Gently Put Them In Their Place
If your prospect asks you ‘Is this one of those pyramid schemes?” but is being very accusatory, angry, irritated or otherwise, foaming at the mouth lol…than you’ve got a negative Nellie on your hands and there is only one useful way to handle those people. Here’s what the conversation would look like, to quickly overcome the ‘pyramid scheme’ objection when your prospect is negative….
Prospect: “Is this one of those ‘pyramid schemes’?”
You: “No. Of course not! Pyramid schemes are illegal. I wouldn’t be involved in anything illegal….would you?”
Now just move on. If they continue to poke and chide, than trust me…you do NOT want this person on your team anyway. Can you imagine what it would be like to work with them? If by some miracle, they did decide to join your business, you’d be dealing with that negative energy on a constant basis. Not good. Try to remember, that you are only looking for those who are looking for you. You want to build and lead a tribe of people that will enrich one another’s lives, not dampen them…right? Here’s how I would end that conversation…
“Hey, listen (Name), I can see now, that you are really not a great fit for this business. That’s totally cool…not a problem, at all. Thank you so much for having coffee with me today. I’ve gotta run but don’t be a stranger, ok?”
Then, vamoose! If you are friends with this person, it is so much better to just nip it in the bud. You don’t ever want to be confrontational, defensive or start lecturing the person about the million different ways that they are misinformed about network marketing. Though that is likely true, trust me, they won’t listen and they’ll just think you’re unstable. Either way, you won’t win, so don’t do it. Let them go.
There you have it. My 2 super simple strategies to quickly overcome the ‘pyramid scheme’ objection (even if your’e brand new to network marketing). Give them a try and let me know how well it works for you. I am always here to listen and help in any way that I can.
